Hanford Marching Band Information now available

Thank you for showing interest in this coming year’s marching show.  We want you to be a part of this amazing and fun activity.  Last year’s show, With Heart and Voice, wowed audiences and won many awards in competitions across the region.

This year’s production promises to be equally fun:  “Drum Circle!”  For this show, the more students we have performing, the more successful we can be.   We need to have your name on our list as soon as possible so we can begin planning for our upcoming season. If you haven't picked up the packet of information, download it here. Turn in your Dot Contract and early-bird deposit as soon as possible.

Fundraising efforts

Time to Start Thinking about the Swing Dance!

As many of you may know, HHS’ annual Swing Dance, to be held May 20th, is the biggest fundraiser for HMA’s general account. Drums Along the Columbia also contributes a great deal to our funds but, unfortunately, the Tri Cities will not be hosting an event this coming summer. Funds raised by the Swing Dance are generated through ticket sales and the silent auction. All three of Hanford’s jazz bands, in addition to EMS’ jazz band, fill the Commons with amazing music all evening long for the enjoyment of young and old who can refresh themselves at the dessert bar. In previous years, baskets for the silent auction were assembled with items donated by the jazz students. With the loss of revenue from DATC, we would like to offer some big ticket items in the auction by soliciting donations from area businesses and companies. This, hopefully, will also relieve some of the financial obligations from our main financiers ~ parents! Our goal is to offer items such as a bed and breakfast stay, car care services, restaurant meals, or therapeutic massages, supplementing these with student donations to fill out a basket. The possibilities are endless. At this early stage, we are asking for suggestions and recommendations from you for items and services you would like to have available in the silent auction. Perhaps you know someone who is supportive of the arts who would be a good person to contact. If you own a business and would be willing to make a donation, we’d also greatly appreciate hearing from you. Please e-mail any suggestions, contact information or personal offers to Holly McTighe at holly.mctighe@frontier.com. Thank you for your continued support of Hanford’s music program and talented students.

United Way Campaign is Underway

To all our wonderful supportive families of music students at HHS:

We would like to invite you to take advantage of the annual United Way Fundraising Drive. Through the drive, you can support the Hanford Music Association because it is an approved United Way recipient. The annual fundraising drive is taking place now, so please consider listing Hanford High School - Music (HMA) in the designated giving line on the form.

As a member of the HMA, you are invited and encouraged to attend the monthly board meeting (1st Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm in the band room) to help make decisions in support of our growing music programs. Your students are benefiting from their involvement in music in many ways ranging from social and brain development to leadership and teamwork skills.

We thank and appreciate your consideration as you make your United Way annual donation!

Feel free to make this information available to your friends and family as well! Thanks.

Beef Raffle - Drawing to be held at the Dec. 9 Concert

Don't miss the 2nd annual Hanford High School Music Beef Raffle! This fundraiser is generously made possible by the Hanna family (thank you , thank you). The entire community will have an opportunity to purchase a $5.00 raffle ticket for a chance to win a side-of-beef. Beef is natural, grass-fed and the winner may even get to work with the donor on meat-cut preferences. Beef delivery is in the Spring.

For each $5 ticket sold, the students will receive $2.50 to go into their personal accounts to help pay their music fees; the booster organization will receive $2.50 to go into our account which supports all music students. The students will be able to check-out envelopes of tickets (5 per envelope) from Swish/Newbury beginning Friday, October 1. The envelopes with the money and/or returned tickets will need to be returned no later than Tuesday, Dec. 7 as the drawing will be at the concert on Thursday, Dec. 9. Please note if unsold tickets are not returned, the student's account will be debited for the amount of money those tickets represent. Students and parents are welcome to offer tickets to their friends/family over the next 2 months.

Community members can purchase tickets at the home football games and all concerts between now and 12/9. All tickets sold at public venues will go into the booster account. Please email rahickey50@aol.com and offer to help sell tickets for these events. Thank you in advance for your help!

If we sell 400 tickets in total, we'll meet our fundraising goal! If all of our music students sell 2-3 tickets, we'll be there! For every 10 tickets a student sells, they add $25.00 to their personal music fees account! And someone's going to enjoy some high quality beef come Spring - Good luck!

Congratulations to the HHS Marching Band! If you missed it, the above is a video link to the Cavalcade of Bands performance on Youtube. See more pictures and video on the Falcon Pride page.

Music Booster Day

Music Booster Day brought in just over $3000 to our booster account. Congratulations to all who helped with this - students, you did a great job (and seemed to have a bit of fun in the process!)

A special word of thanks to those who helped with set-up Sat. morning, helped drive students to neighborhoods, helped prep and serve lunch, helped clean up and shuttle students to Fran Rish and to the many more who were standing by ready to help in any way needed.  You are awesome and appreciated!

All of our music students will benefit from this fund raiser!

Sept 18 is Music Booster Day,
All MUSIC Students and Families:

We have a school-wide all-music-student fundraiser coming up next Saturday Sept.18: MUSIC BOOSTER DAY.  Here are the details:  The marching band is to report to the HS at 8am (8-9am rehearsal); all other music students are to report at 9am.  Please wear a HHS music shirt (or school colors) with jeans.  We will be in neighborhoods to hand out flyers & collect donations.  We will eat lunch together at school at 11:30ish (FREE).  You'll be ready to go home by 12:30ish (except marching band students who will stay for an afternoon rehearsal ending at 6pm).  All music students are expected to participate.

This fundraiser supports all our music groups and all we do throughout the year (clinicians, workshops, some marching band costs, travel expenses for all groups that are outside of what the district provides, some concert attire expenses, scholarship money, and more).  We do need to ask parents to help drive (we need about 20 drivers).  If you have not already volunteered to drive, please email rahickey50@aol.com - there is a RSD volunteer driver form that needs to be filled out (should come home with your student as soon as you have volunteered).

THANKS so much for your support of our excellent music program.  Please note that this same information is supposed to come home with your students on Monday so you will be informed about this event several times.  See you on Saturday!

Welcome to Hanford High Music. We are excited to welcome many new students and their families to the programs here at Hanford. Have a great 2010-2011 school year!

Mike Bryan & Chris Newbury

Good Luck Mike Bryan!

For the past 9 years, Mike Bryan has been a superstar teacher at Hanford Middle School, Enterprise Middle School, and Hanford High School. He has worked well with students and brought another level of achievement to the Richland School District. His accomplishments were too frequent to list, but some memorable ones are winning Jazz Festivals, most recently the Mr. Hood Community College Jazz Festival and the CBC Jazz Festival. He frequently brought in guests and provided experiences that students don't get to have at other schools and in other programs. More than just a successful teacher, Mr. Bryan has been a great friend and mentor. He is easy to talk to and made almost every activity seem tremendously fun! We are going to miss Mr. Bryan for his silly faces, blunt jokes, and great personality. Mr. Bryan is moving to the Vancouver School of the Arts where he will teach Jazz Band, Jazz Band, Jazz Band, and yes, Jazz Band! What a perfect fit for Mr. Bryan!

Welcome Chris Newbury!

The Hanford music program is going to take a step in a new direction with the addition of Chris Newbury as co-director. While the program will change, Mr. Newbury brings about a fresh desire for excellence and has extremely high standards. Mr. Newbury grew up in Montana and moved to the Tri-Cities where he started and estalished a championship percussion program at Pasco High School. After several years, Mr. Newbury enrolled at Eastern Washington University where he studied Percussion and Jazz Piano. During this time, he has written music for schools throughout the USA, coached high school drum lines, and even been on staff for a Drum Corps. It is going to be an exciting ride with Mr. Newbury as a teacher at Hanford. In the fall of 2005, Pasco High School and Hanford High School joined to march in the Hollywood Christmas Parade and play in the Hollywood Bowl. Mr. Newbury became the percussion teacher for both schools! In fact, since that trip, Mr. Newbury's picture of riding Space Mountain at DisneyLand with Mr. Swisher and Mr. Bryan has been hanging at Hanford. We are extremely glad to welcome Mr. Newbury to Hanford High School.
